Soon you'll pass a short spur, labeled "2008 Landslide Viewpoint," that leads to a view up to the sheer bluff above. The path then heads up a set of steps and makes a traverse in mossy woods: note the large cedar stumps with springboard notches. The tread, which is soft and soggy in the wet season, rises to a spot which overlooks the Wood Duck Pond. Pass the junction with the Cedar Knoll Trail, which comes in from the left. The trail follows an old road bed in a dense understory. The slope forest here is dominated by western red-cedar, western hemlock, Douglas-fir, red alder, black cottonwood, and big-leaf maple. Walk back towards the woods, and find the signed Maple Ridge Trail heading into the mossy forest. A couple of fishermen are in the river here. Walk all the way down to the boat ramp parking area. On the other side of an alder-forested island is the main channel. There’s a still water channel of the Clackamas here that displays good reflections. Rounding the bend, continue along the verges of the expansive disk golf course. Before you reach a bend, you'll see the Riverbend Trailhead to your left. The trail recrosses the park entrance road and drops down a slope in shady mixed forest to reach the level of the river. To descend to the Clackamas, go right on the Riverbend Trail. Come to a junction: ten yards to the right is the Riverbend Trail. Then cross the paved road that leads to the Riverbend Day-use Area. Pass the wooden water tank you saw from above, and cross the campground road. Drop down a slope and hike under shady maples. Ignore the first trail splitting off to the left, but go left on the second one otherwise, you’ll find yourself in the Kingfisher Group Camp Area. The Vortex Trail continues across the road to eventually connect with the Rivermill Trail in the Riverside section of the park (See the Milo McIver Riverside Loop Hike.), but go left down the road track. The trail then traverses and rises past moss-limbed Douglas-firs to a bench and a road. The trail leads into trees to a small parking area, where you'll find a trail leading into the woods on the left side of a gated road.įollow this new section of the Vortex Trail, constructed by Trailkeepers of Oregon in 2018-19, as it winds down to a view through the trees of a mossy water tank. In fact, this meadow has seen other action as well: a model airplane airstrip, no longer used, can be found in the middle, and an episode of Grimm was filmed here in 2017. As you hike through the meadow, with some stately oaks on the fringes, imagine the smell of pot hanging in the air and naked or half-naked bodies grooving to the tunes. Arrive at the bottom of the bluff, and cross the Vortex Meadow, site of the America’s only state-sponsored rock concert. An old barbecue grate allows you to step over a trickling creek. Cross a substantial footbridge and traverse down. The trail drops down the slope under Douglas-fir, red-cedar, and big-leaf maple in a lush understory dominated by hazel, vine maple, and sword fern. Near the plaque honoring Milo McIver, the graveled Viewpoint Trail, constructed in 2016-17 by volunteer groups, including Trailkeepers of Oregon, leads into the mixed forest of the high bluff (This trail replaces one on the other side of the viewing area that got washed out almost every year). The Clackamas River winds below, with Mount Adams to the left and Mount Hood front and center. The Riverbend Loop takes you down from a view of the Cascade Range, across the Vortex Meadow - site of a state-sponsored rock concert in 1970 - to the Clackamas River and then back up a leafy, forested slope to the viewpoint on a high bluff 300 feet above the river.įor a shorter loop of 3.4 miles with less elevation gain, begin your hike at the Riverbend Trailhead, and skip the Vortex Loop and the Viewpoint Trail leading up to the McIver Memorial Viewpoint Trailhead.įrom the parking area, walk down past the gazebo to the new (2017) viewing area. The trail system is interconnected, but most visitors choose one of two loops: the one described here on the west side of the park and the Milo McIver Riverside Loop Hike on the east side. This is a full-service park, with campgrounds, boat launches, a disk golf course, horse trails, picnic areas, and even a fish hatchery. The park named in his honor is not on a freeway, however, but lies nestled along a couple of wide, sweeping bends in the Clackamas River near the town of Estacada. During his tenure as Chair, McIver developed Oregon's freeway system to be recognized as the best in the nation at that time. McIver was a member of the Oregon State Highway Commission from 1950-1962, and Chairman of the Commission for the last four years of his term. Adding a visual or two is just a great way to break up the text on your page, and make your content more fun to read. If you don’t have a lot of creative work to show off, then a nice photo of the office space or a cool graph of last year’s rising sales is more than enough. When it comes to emphasizing visual elements, Squarespace is particularly useful – so if you have a lot of creative work to show off, it’s a great choice. There’s plenty of web design software out there that was created to make this task as easy as possible. Studies have even shown that people can recall 65% of visually presented information three days after seeing it.ĭon’t sweat it if you don’t think of yourself as particularly design-savvy. Visuals, visuals, visualsīold text and strategically placed headlines are a good start when it comes to organizing your page, but the best way to catch a reader’s eye is through some well-placed graphics or tables. Are you serious about product quality? Do you strive for sustainability in your manufacturing process? This is the time to celebrate it! 3. Instead of going generic, give yourself some time to think about what you’re most proud of, and of what separates you from your competitors. However, it’s important not to select buzzwords just because they sound great, which is an easy trap to fall into: 55% of all Fortune 100 companies list “integrity” as a core value, while 40% cite “team-work.” Worthy attributes for sure, but they start to lose meaning when everyone’s throwing them around. But don’t worry if that’s not the case – all you have to do is brainstorm a few keywords that best represent what your business stands for.Įmphasizing a few good values is a great way to organize what you’d like to say on your “About” page, and can make the task of explaining your business seem less daunting. If you’re writing a page for a larger organization, you might have some predetermined values or brand guidelines to draw from. Once you have a general tone worked out, reinforce it by introducing your company’s values. Hearing how the sentences come together will alert you to any unnatural structure or word choices that you wouldn’t actually use in daily conversation. Reading your new copy aloud is a great way to test for tone. You already know what you’re talking about, so let the information flow as if speaking to a friend and you’ll probably strike the ideal tone. Remember that “professional” doesn’t have to mean “boring” – it’s okay for your writing to show some excitement! And don’t overthink it, either. But don’t worry – you won’t need to dust off any high school English textbooks to get this right! For a professional website, the writing just needs to find a middle ground between knowledgeable and approachable. Tone is an element that should be consistent throughout your “About” page. Knowing what to include makes it easier to craft an “About” page that strikes the balance between practical and inspiring – and the good news is that there’s no better person for the job than you. Read on for the essential dos and don’ts, and to see examples of pages that have gotten it right. If you met someone at a dinner party who kept droning on about niche industry stuff, you’d probably start planning an emergency exit towards the hors d’oeuvres. Think of it like meeting someone for the first time – they’ll want to know why you do what you do, and how you got started in your field. An example of this could be your brand’s vision statement. But your page should also acknowledge the softer stuff that people are curious about. Yes, users need to know who you are and what services you provide. It’s also a visitor’s first encounter with the people and story behind your site, and a strong page will transfer your passion on to your readers.Ī good “About Us” page starts with the basics, but quickly moves beyond them. An “About Us” section is an opportunity to introduce yourself on your own terms. If you’re stressed about how to write an “About Us” page for your website, it probably means you know the importance of having a good one. She was exposed early to the world of small business, growing up in Skagit County, an agricultural area in Washington state. Erwin leads a 30,000-strong organization that rakes in $32 billion in annual revenue. In 2019, she was named CEO of Verizon Business, the division geared towards business customers, including big corporations, government agencies and small businesses. It's a big undertaking for Erwin who was with one of the companies that merged to become Verizon in 2000 and rose steadily up the corporate ladder of the $233 billion telecom behemoth. Some of the products will be available for free, including limited use of BlueJeans and tools that small businesses can use to evaluate their online security risks. Verizon Business is also providing small business owners an online communications tool through BlueJeans, the video conferencing platform it bought in April. The launch of the new program dubbed Verizon Business Comeback Coach includes a new dashboard that would give small businesses with limited or no online presence a way to reach customers. Verizon Business is unveiling an initiative on Monday with new products aimed at helping businesses - including mom-and-pop shops - navigate the pandemic. The pandemic caused sudden, severe changes, she said: "We've moved from reacting and responding to reimagining and defining what success looks like." "This is the hardest quarter I've ever experienced as a leader and I've been in the business at Verizon 33 years," Erwin told Business Insider. She watched her favorite shops near her New Jersey home shut down while, similarly, her organization scrambled for ways to help the Verizon clients hardest hit by the crisis: small businesses. She lost a close friend to the virus, which devastated her home state of Washington in the early days of the crisis. The coronavirus pandemic forced Tami Erwin, the CEO of Verizon Business, to confront challenges that were both personal and professional. The CEO of Verizon Business says the coronavirus crisis wreaked havoc both personally, as it took the life of a close friend, and professionally, as it led to her toughest quarter at the telecom giant "No website, no ability to do any kind of commercial transaction via a website, and not even a website presence that showed their address, their hours of operation or any kind of communication. "When they shut their front door, they were out of business because they didn't have a digital storefront," Erwin told Business Insider. On Monday, Erwin's 30,000-strong Verizon organization is rolling out new products geared towards helping small businesses that were forced to shut down suddenly, particularly brick-and-mortar shops that had limited or no online presence. She said the coronavirus crisis led to the toughest quarter in her career, as she reeled from the death of a friend and the devastation of small businesses in her community. Similar to our article on venomous snakes, alongside potency of venom we’ve also tried to take into account the amount of venom the spider injects when biting, as well as how aggressive they are, and how likely you are to encounter one. So even though there are some killer spiders on this list, they’re a long way off being the most dangerous animals in the world. Whilst ‘death by spider bite’ does happen, it’s very rare – with an estimated seven human deaths each year – as most clinics and hospitals now have species-specific antivenin (antitoxin) to treat a potentially harmful spider bite correctly. However, there are a handful of spiders with venom so potent a single bite can kill a person. For those spiders that are able to bite humans, the majority rarely cause injuries more significant than a mosquito bite. Spider venom has evolved to paralyse and kill smaller animals than humans, and most spiders are either too small to be able to puncture human skin, or not aggressive enough to attempt it. Many spiders hunt by using their fangs to inject venom into their prey, and it is a subset of these spiders that can be dangerous – in some cases fatal – to humans. Below we discuss the most dangerous and most venomous spiders in the world.Īll spiders are predators, typically with an insect-based diet, though there are some notable exceptions.
